WHAT IS ADORATION? Eucharistic adoration is a practice in the Roman Catholic Church, in which the Blessed Sacrament is exposed, adored, and praised by the faithful.
THE HISTORY OF ADORATION A new form of Christian worship had developed by the middle of the third century known today as monasticism. Many believers felt called to live a life free of the world's distractions, taking a solitary life in the deserts of Palestine and Egypt. Many people who were called to this life kept blessed portions of the Eucharist where they lived, foreshadowing the modern practice of preserving a Eucharistic host in a chapel for the faithful. The setting apart of the Eucharist in a specialized holder, as today's Eucharist is in Adoration, has a long history in the Church. "In the 8th century, a priest in Lanciano, Italy was experiencing doubts about the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. In the middle of saying Mass, he said the words of consecration (“This is my body,” “This is my blood) and saw the bread and wine transform into real flesh and blood. The blood coagulated into five globules (later believed to be representative of the five wounds of Christ). Word of the miracle quickly spread, the local archbishop launched an investigation, and the Church approved the miracle. The flesh is still preserved to this day. Professor of anatomy Odoardo Linoli conducted a scientific analysis of the flesh in 1971 and concluded that the flesh was cardiac tissue, the blood appeared to be fresh blood (as opposed to blood that was 1200 years old), and there was no trace of preservatives.You can visit the miraculous flesh and blood in the Church of San Francesco in Lanciano, Italy."

The Celebrant may begin the Offertory with one of the sentences on pages 343-344, or with some other sentence of Scripture. During the Offertory, a hymn, psalm, or anthem may be sung. Representatives of the congregation bring the people’s offerings of bread and wine, and money or other gifts, to the deacon or celebrant. The people stand while the offerings are presented and placed on the Altar.
