WHEN ANOINTING OF THE SICK IS CALLED FOR? It is called for those who are seriously ill, at the point of death, about to undergo a serious operation, or those who are elderly who's frailty has become worse. The sacrament is repeatable.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF THE SACRAMENT? Sins are forgiven, grace to face death and judgement are given, spiritual preparation to die, and if God's will, physical healing.
ACCOUNTS IN SCRIPTURE WHEN THE APOSTLES ARE HEALING THE SICK IN JESUS' NAME
"Then Peter said, silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them-walking, leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God" [Acts 3:6-8 and Acts 3:1-10, Acts 3:16].
"So that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them" [Acts 5:15]
Tabitha [Dorcas] is raised from the dead by Peter. "And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber...But Peter put them all forth [Mark 5:40], and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up. And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive" [Acts 9:36-41 and Acts 9:36-41].
Like all the other sacraments, Anointing of the Sick gives you sanctifying grace, since it implies that the recipient is already free from mortal sin. Then there is that oneness with God, which is the source of all spiritual strength as it is also the measure of our capacity for the happiness of heaven.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK RITE "In the essential rite of the sacrament, a priest or bishop lays his hands on the sick person's head. Then he anoints the sick person on the forehead and palms of the hands with the oil of the sick, a holy oil that has been blessed by a bishop. During the anointing, the priest or bishop says the following words: 'Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in His love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord Who frees you from sin save you and raise you up."
